Manialtepec Lagoon

Located 10 miles (16 kilometers) west from Puerto Escondido through Federal Highway 200, this is a body of water of approximately 5 miles (8 kilometers) long, surrounded by mangroves and a wide variety of flora. It is a place of exceptional beauty. This lagoon has small beach areas where visitors can fish specimens of sea bream, sea bass, catfish or other species. It is also possible to row placidly in kayak or drive around in a motorboat, watching and discovering beautiful birds, local as well as migratory. This is the place where the visitor can admire one of the best shows: the Bocabarra, known also as Lagarto beach, where the river, the lagoon and the sea meet. It offers one of the best places to contemplate a sunset.

Bird watching is better at sunrise, since it is the time of more activity among the birds and the climate is milder, offering a unique opportunity to get very close and personal with the wild life from the coastal lagoons in Oaxaca.
